Massive Attack jako zespół powstał w 1987 roku i jest uważany za wynalazcę oraz głównego przedstawiciela gatunku muzycznego zwanego Trip-Hopem. Podobnie jak Tricky i Portishead pochodzą z Bristolu. Ich muzyka to trudna do opisania mieszanka następujących stylów muzycznych: soul, hip-hop, reggae, dub oraz rock. Robert Del Naja (pseudonim: „3D”) był artystą graffiti i wykonywał w ten sposób własne „usługi społeczne”. Niestety został aresztowany za swoje dzieła sztuki.
